Feelings, Life, Love, Poetry

i am the river

This poem was born out of conversations with a friend about connection, sharing self, vulnerability, relationships, boundaries and more.

I believe our true feelings often remain unspoken; they flow like underground rivers that have deep impacts on the way we engage and bond or not with those who come and go in our lives.

Dedicated to those with the courage to let the floodgates open.

I experimented with shaping this poem in several ways. The shape I like most is the one above — I think it best reflects the content of the poem. I offer the  shapes below in contrast, and as alternatives that might better fit others’ experiences. The words remain the same; only the shapes are different.

i am the river (shape 2)

i try

not to

be a river,

but waters

from a deep-

within spring

are released with a

kind word, or a secret,

a song, a sunset, a sunrise

forcing the floodgates open,

allowing stemmed tides to

rise and rush through:

tumbling, falling

racing, white-

capped and

chaotic where

once there were

fences, wires and

walls, the dry land

becomes like a flood,

drowning me so quickly

one stolen breath after

another after another

until i am the river

denied, the water

damned, freed

to flow now

unwanted

or not

so

i am the river (shape 1)

i try
not to
be a river,
but waters
from a deep-
within spring
are released with a
kind word, or a secret,
a song, a sunset, a sunrise
forcing the floodgates open,
allowing stemmed tides to
rise and rush through:
tumbling, falling
racing, white-
capped and
chaotic where
once there were
fences, wires and
walls, the dry land
becomes like a flood,
drowning me so quickly
one stolen breath after
another after another
until i am the river
denied, the water
damned, freed
to flow now
unwanted
or not
so
