be who you are

This is about being who you are. Not surprising really, given the title LOL…

be who you are

i know what it’s like
when the world is against you,
and your mom in her pain
can’t see what her words do

it seems you are flawed
and bent out of shape
perhaps at some point
you experienced rape

not the kind that involves
physical parts down below,
but that which drowns spirit
in the midst of its flow

it comes via daggers
and knives in the back
morn, noon and night
all you get is its flack

you don’t measure up
to them it’s so clear
your “deficits” are
the things they most fear

your hair or its lack
are somehow your fault
your very own self should
be locked in a vault!

“you don’t have a mind
to decide what you want
your heart has been damaged,”
they feel free to taunt

they say your esteem
has sunk below zero
while to others aplenty
you’ve become a true hero

and to me you’re an angel
your presence is magic
i’m not buying in
to stories made tragic

i’ve seen you make light
with the slight of a hand
create love and desire
from dry desert sands

please ignore the bs,
stuff the critics in boxes,
then listen instead
to the wisdom of foxes

only you are the judge
of the person you are
of where you have been
and what lies afar…
