you know what to do

Almonte resident Debbie Anderson made these signs and stuck them out on her front lawn to remind us all what we need to do to beat COVID-19. Thank you Debbie.

Photographer Greg Cherry captured them on a walk by and posted the pic on our Friends of Mississippi Mills FB page where I saw it and was inspired to put poetry to Greg’s photograph. Thank you Greg for permission to use the image.

I love the creative forces that come alive in communities when we pay attention to what is going on around us.

you know what to do

you know what to do

“bee kind, bee safe,
and also strong”
say yellow signs
on snowy lawns

when it seems
there’s nothing left
our spirits broken
our hearts bereft

people say from
dusk ’til dawn
“now’s the time
we must hold on”

don’t they know
there’s been a theft?
our very souls
will soon be cleft

terms and germs
and nasty stuff
hells bells nineteen
we’ve had enough

“we can’t,” we say
“it’s been too long
we must get out
and join a throng”

“we’re human beings
we need to touch
no more lock downs
it’s just too much!”

but deep within
we know the truth
we have to stay
below one roof

please heed the signs
for others’ sake
and keep yourselves
inside and safe

you can do it:
control your mind
remember we
are all entwined

bee kind, bee safe,
and also strong
so together we
may right what’s wrong
