the cathedral
Wherever I am, I try to remember to stop, look, listen and observe what’s going on in and around me. Whenever I do, I am rewarded with a rich and meaningful experience, particularly when I pause to drink in the astonishing beauty of nature.
This poem is about that.

the cathedral
when you stop to listen
you know god lives here
just as i knew s/he did
in the forest of shanties
i surveyed in satwa
there, it was hot and dusty
here, it is cold and snowy
tall cedars stand close enough
to rub and complain against each other
as they reach for an unreachable sky
“do you hear us?” they say,
“our hearts are one.”
the sun’s rays slant knife-like between
sinewy trunks, causing the winter carpet
below to glisten, sparkle and shine
each season manifests fragile beauty,
unique treasures for us to discover
in the cathedral,
life pulls through one day,
and death rides the sled the next
meanwhile, love whispers in the treetops,
as it always does for those who are found
