don’t put me in a cage

We all long to be free in our own way. To see a world of possibility stretching out before us like an open road. This poem is about that.

It was inspired by the video (a funny Harley Davidson commercial from 2011) shared by a biking friend on his FB page. I’ve reposted the video at the bottom of the post. I hope you enjoy both the poem and the video.

don’t put me in a cage

don’t put me in a cage, my love,
don’t tie me to a post
any kind of prison
is the one I hate the most

shackles, chains, or chicken wire
to me they’re all the same:
ways to keep me in a box
and my spirit for to tame

i want to fly, i need to soar
my home is not the ground
i belong amongst the clouds
don’t try to pin me down

let me go, release my heart
i long for an open road
one that goes to any place
where freedom is the code

let me feel the wind ahead
know the power of my ride
and become intoxicated
by horizons open wide

i want to be where i am free
to be who i really am
where time stands still, the air is chill,
and i don’t give a damn
