the albatross

Albatross in flight

I’m not sure where this poem came from or exactly what it means, but it emerged and took flight as a result of a prompt in a writing workshop.

So here it is.

the albatross

by punkie

an albatross my fate did toss

like caution to the wind

around my neck it once bedecked

the weight of someone’s sin

with wings spread wide above the tide

it sailed and swooped and dived

to find lost treasure and guilty pleasure

the sun and sea connived

its feathers white soon blinded sight

and beckoned me to come

on unknown flights beyond the night

where fear is deaf and dumb
